Horace A. "Jimmy" Jones

Biography

Born in Missouri in 1906, Horace A. “Jimmy” Jones followed in the footsteps of his father, Ben Jones, en route to the Hall of Fame. Jones worked with his father for Woolford Farm until 1939 when they moved to Calumet Farm. Under the direction of the father and son team, Calumet was America's leading owner 12 times and eading breeder 14 times.

Although he trained many champions with his father, Jimmy Jones was the trainer of record for seven champions, including Triple Crown winner Citation.

Six of the champions Jones trained — Armed, Citation, Coaltown, Bewitch, Two Lea, and Tim Tam — were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Jones was the top money-winning trainer five times (1947, 1948, 1949, 1957, and 1961) and was the first trainer to surpass $1 million in earnings in a single year, accomplishing the feat in 1947.

Jones won the Kentucky Derby with Iron Liege in 1957 and with Tim Tam in 1958. He also trained Derby winners Citation and Hill Gail, but his father was the trainer or record for those particular races. He won the Preakness with Faultless (1947),Citation (1948), Fabius (1956), and Tim Tam (1958). He was also the trainer of record for Citation’s 1948 Belmont Stakes victory.

Among the many notable races Jones won included multiple editions of the Florida Derby, Jersey Derby, Santa Anita Derby, Hollywood Gold Cup, Arlington Classic, and Arlington Handicap, among others.

Jones retired from training in 1964 to become director of racing at Monmouth Park. He died in 2001 at the age of 94.
